Digital Product Passport

What is a Digital Product Passport

The term 'Digital Product Passport' (DPP) refers to a digital solution that makes information on the life cycle of a product accessible to consumers. This information ranges from production data and the origin of raw materials to the complete production process.

All this data collected along the value chain is made available to the consumer through the association of the product with a unique identifier (NFC tag, QR Code) physically present on the product (or positioned on the packaging tag) that acts as a bridge to its Digital Twin. The DPP is displayed on smartphones through a digital, inclusive and stimulating experience that allows brands and consumers to establish a 1:1 relationship by staying in constant contact and enjoying exclusive information and content.

Vital data for the dpp:

  • Product and Batch Serial
  • Materials and Origin
  • Date and place of manufacture
  • Product details (Size, Colour, Model...)
  • Care Instructions
  • Packaging
  • Certifications
  • Sustainability and circularity indicators
  • Disposal procedure

Datas are secured through the use of blockchain technology that allows the storage of the NFT (Non-Fungible Token) associated with the Digital Product Passport in one's wallet.

Why Digital Product Passport

The adoption of this tool and, thus, the provision of end-to-end supply chain information guarantee brands the achievement of a new level of transparency, only possible through a structured, conscious and item-level traceability plan.

Having a 1:1 interaction with the product, in addition to giving the PLR information also enables the possibility of:

  • ensuring the authenticity of the product by providing the buyer with the certificate of ownership
  • ensuring its commitment to sustainability by providing raw material certifications, product environmental impact data and recycling practices
  • taking improvement actions on the entire supply chain by promoting circular and sustainable practices
  • establighing a 1:1 relationship with the end customer, opening up endless possibilities for marketing activities
  • gaining insight into product/customer interaction WW

The era of self-regulation came to an end when the new legislation came into force.

Corroborating the need for the adoption of this cutting-edge solution is the European Commission's Circular Economy Action Plan (CEAP), which envisages the mandatory introduction of DPP for the textile and electronics sectors from 2027. This strategy uses the Ecodesign Regulation for Sustainable Products (ESPR) to define the DPP requirements.
The requirements of the EU legislation on the digital product passport stipulate that the information contained in the DPP must be based on open standards, developed with an interoperable format (i.e. capable of exchanging information between two or more systems, networks, applications) and be digitally readable, structured and easily accessible via a common smartphone. And this is where Temera comes in.
